Swiss pharmaceutical company Pfizer has launched a Viagra-like pill for impotence in a move to counter its famous “impotence drug”
According to a press release from Pfizer, the new drug is expected to bring men to the brink of having erectile dysfunction (ED) and thus provide a boost to their sex life.
“The drug contains sildenafil citrate, a substance that helps in the flow of blood to the penis,” the company said. “When a man is impotent he cannot sustain an erection. However, the drug helps men to overcome the physical and psychological symptoms of ED by increasing blood flow to the penis. This is because the active component of the drug in Viagra is sildenafil citrate. The effect of the drug can be experienced within 30 minutes of consumption.”
The drug is also marketed as a “non-pharmacological” treatment for pulmonary hypertension and is available only on prescription.
“The drug acts by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which is an enzyme that increases the blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation,” the company said.
Pfizer’s marketing director, Michael Heupel, was also quoted in the press release. According to the company, the drug is effective in treating male impotence and the company is also promoting it in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
“The main ingredient is sildenafil citrate, which is an organic compound with a long-lasting effect in the body. It is a vasodilator and is well known for its ability to dilate the blood vessels, which in turn improves circulation in the lungs and helps the blood to the lungs,” the company said.
The new drug will also be marketed as a non-pharmacological treatment for erectile dysfunction. Pfizer is planning to market the drug in its online pharmacy section.
